Sr High Youth On-Line Group Diary

Collect: O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your loving kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Genesis 21 15-19

When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes.  Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, "Do not let me look on the death of the child." And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.  And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, "What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.  Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him."  Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.

On Sun. June 22 we will begin our drive to Chicago.  With a caravan of Vans, filled with our belongings, we will venture to the bigger city to "Seek and Serve Christ in all people". (BCP)  This will prove to be an adventure.  With 14 St. John's youth and 4 adults we will work closely with Rev. David our Chicago coordinator and the leaders of a number of Episcopal Church Service agencies to bring hope and God's love to the work we will be doing.   We will be: Landscaping sites belonging to Lawrence Hall Youth Services Purchasing, preparing and serving meals to the people of Breakthrough Ministries Doing inventory & organizing at the Good News Soup Kitchen Bagging food and serving dinner at All Saints Attending an orientation to the Life of youth on Chicago streets Landscaping and cleaning at the Sojourner Truth House Serving at the Kenwood Kitchen and sorting food at the Chicago Food Depository   Along the way we will be attending Eucharistic services at St. James Episcopal Cathedral and at All Saints Episcopal Church to supplement our Morning Prayer & Compline.   As we travel through our mission trip we will update everyone on our experiences and share pictures.

Matthew 10:40-42

Jesus said, "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.

Sunday

We had a really good start to the day at church with pet parade. We now notice every single dog near us they seem to be following us today. Petey-cakes tried to turn orange in the car ride by eating 45 carrots. Most of us got shakes at BEEF A ROO although FYI they don't have chocolate chips and they won't put brownies into the shakes. We got honked at multiple times because of our incredibly bright shirts were visible from the highway. The larger van had rousing conversations about friends, Rob & Big & the mystery tour bus.

Oh P.S. we almost lost Emy to a motorcycle gang at BEEF A Roo

(God spoke to Peter through coffee!) After finishing our jobs we got to shower! Yay! Then we went to Navy Peir. We ate at Capi's an Italian kitchen. We had a grand old time walking around the Peir and riding the farris while! Today was a great kick-off work day and I learned a lot!

We woke up around 8:00. We had a deliciouses breakfast of Golden Grahams, and really watery Cystal Light. After breakfast we left for Lawrence Hall. Its a living facility for teen orphans. They were all really nice. We scrubbed baseboards and windows. The fireplace took forever to clean. Wayne and Bob used the carpet cleaner and sanitized the whole floor. After we all had lunch delivered. Yummy ham and turkey wraps, salad and cookies. After lunch, we worked for about another hour, then packed up and left. On the way back to the church, Sheila and Zoe got pulled over by an ambulance because they thought Zoe looked like Scarlet Johanson. We journeyed over to the shower/pool place in some recreation building. After we were all squeaky glean we went to Navy Pier and had an amazing dinner at Capi's, a really good Italian Restaurant. We went and walked around Navy Plaza for a while and decided to ride the giant ferris wheel. We bought our tickets it was really HIGH! You could see the entire downtown Chicago from the top Rich's group got separated for about 20 min before the Ferris wheel. We found some awesome electric spheres and took like a billion pics by them. Then we went home and packed up and went to bed. It was amazing experience and can't wait for tomorrow.

Today we visited the Sojourner Truth woman's shelter. We raked old mulch away and replaced it with new mulch. I ended up sleeping on the way up to Gary and Ann slept the whole way back. When we got back to the church some of us played “Spoons”, “Monkey-in-the Middle”, and “Extreme Spoons”. Others napped, played the piano and drum, and various other activities. Then, we watched two interesting videos. After that we had dinner at an Italian restaurant and ate pizza. That brings me up till now, so I think we will go to bed now.

Good night, Peter

Today we woke up at 7:00 ate breakfast and left to the Sojourner Truth house for women and children, and I learned that there is lots of danger on the streets for women and children. We helped dig dirt and put in new mulch. We had really good food and cake. Then we went back to the church and hung out and threw the ball around. And Ben and Emy owned in spoons. Then we went to a pizza place and it was really good. Then we played the telephone game and it was really fun.

Thursday

Hello,

Today we had a lot of fun. We woke up later than all the other days. It was very nice to sleep in. Around 9:00 we left to go work & sail. We worked at a soup kitchen, went on a small tour, and we went ailing. In the soup kitchen we helped prepare the meal, serve the meal, and we helped clean. the tour went around to some small sites like Barack Obama house. Wen we were sailing we were allowed to help steer the boat. After we did those activities we came back to the church and got ready to go the play we ate dinner at this little Chinese place. Then we went to Wicked, everyone was excited. Once they play started, I was amazed. It was wonderful, all the music fit the story perfectly. Over all this day was very fun. Because we had work and fun combinted.

I enjoyed helping out at the soup kitchen. It was nice to help out less fortunate people. I also really like touring Hyde Park and the musical was very fun part of the day. One other good part was being able to go sailing. Thanks to David.

Hello to everyone and greetings from Chicago!

Today (Thursday) was absolutely delightful. We began our day with a hearty breakfast and an early start. We then left the church and dropped off one team of youth to go sailing, while my team worked at a soup kitchen, preparing food for the noon time meal. The third team toured the neighborhood visiting the homes of Barack Obama, Mohamad Ali, and other sites around Chicago. After a couple of hours, our groups rotated and my group went sailing on lake Michigan. It was very relaxing and sunny. After sailing, my group was highly anticipating an opportunity to shower, so we went to a beach where we thought there might be showers. There weren't showers so we just chilled on the warm beach. We then returned to the church to clean up for the play and eat dinner. And then left for Wicked. The play was absolutely pnenominal! I had goose bumps the whole time. It was easily the best show I've ever seen. Overall, I would say this was a great day!

Friday

Today we closed with th wonderful David and took off for lunch on the beach. Our time was spent swimming napping, and playing beach games (Girls totally beat the boys at beach softball)! It was the Perfect day for the beach. After dinner we all hung out and cleaned. I love that everyone has gotten alone w/everyone during this trip we made the existing bonds we had with other stronger.

Marcella

Today, we began by going to the grocery store, and got peanut better and jelly for sandwiches. We then made sandwiches and walked the way to the beach of Lake Michigan. We ate lunch, went swimming and played baseball. It was a fun time! When it started to drizzle we headed back to the church, and cut through the Lincoln Park zoo. We saw kangaroos monkeys, and the largest deer I've ever seen! We then went to dinner. It was a nice restaurant and our waiter was good at well, waiting. We then went back to the church and cleaned up the van, bathrooms and sleeping areas. Some people got out of control with the cleaning chemicals. Well, thats all for today.

Jessica.
